In 1998, author Tracy Chevalier finished her second novel, Girl with a Pearl Earring. The novel, which takes place in 17th century Holland, focuses around a young girl who becomes a maid in a painter's household. By luck or curse, she is intertwined into the world of Johannes Vermeer and his family.
